Job Description

The University of Manchester is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate in History to work with Dr. Alexia Yates (PI) on the AHRC-funded research project ‘Rise of the Rentier: France and the Making of Financial Modernity, 1830-1930’ (AHRC Project Grant Ref.: AH/S012680/1). The post is an opportunity for researchers in the history of economic life to carry out both directed and independent research in the area of French financial history. The postholder will be a member of the Department of History and the Centre for Economic Cultures at the University of Manchester; they will be encouraged to participate in departmental activities and will be mentored by the PI.

Main duties include:

  • Generating research data from archival and print collections;
  • Analyzing and interpreting data through qualitative methodologies, and applying digital humanities techniques such as mapping and network analysis to develop new understandings of the subject area;
  • Disseminating research findings in publications and conference presentations;
  • Co-organizing and assisting with knowledge mobilization and public engagement events associated with the project;
  • Managing the project website.

Applicants must hold a doctorate in modern history or closely related discipline, ideally with a focus on European economic history and culture. Because the post involves work with primary source materials in French, very good fluency in French is required. They should have experience in conducting digital and archival research; experience of building and analyzing datasets is preferred. The postholder will be expected and funded to travel to carry out research in France and present findings in the UK and the United States.

Candidates are invited to submit a 2-page statement outlining how they meet the requirements of this position, and a CV that includes the names and contact details of two academic referees who have agreed to write on their behalf.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and interviews arranged via Zoom as soon as possible after the closing date.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
