Job Description

The Henry Royce Institute (Royce), a UKRI-funded national institute, supports advanced materials research and innovation. With its Hub at The University of Manchester, the Institute has spokes at ten Partner and Associate organisations: the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Cambridge, Cranfield, Oxford and Imperial College London, as well as at the UK Atomic Energy Authority, the National Nuclear Laboratory and the Advanced Forming Research Centre Catapult. Royce’s vision of ‘advanced materials for a sustainable society’ is delivered through:

  • Enabling national materials research, collaboration, foresighting and strategy
  • Providing access to world-leading facilities and research expertise
  • Catalysing industrial collaboration and accelerating translation
  • Fostering materials science skills development, innovation training and outreach

Royce is seeking an experienced professional to act as Head of Operations, a key strategic role in the Institute. This represents an exciting opportunity to take up a role in the leadership team, as Royce completes its set-up phase and establishes itself as the UK centre for catalysing industrial collaboration and the exploitation of advanced materials research.

As a member of Royce’s leadership team, you will work in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and national Partners to ensure the Institute delivers its vision and strategic objectives and to drive the development and execution of our operational and business plans. You will oversee and evolve the direction and management for all operations activities, including: research development and impact; project management; finance; skills, training and outreach; marketing and communications; technical and experimental support and facilities; administrative support.

The successful candidate will have substantial experience in strategic development, line management, and delivery of high-quality operations. Knowledge and understanding of the environment in which a national institute or university operates, including an in-depth understanding of external research funding and facilities, is essential.
