Job Description

The Dalton Nuclear Institute (DNI) is committed to the pursuit of research excellence, education, knowledge exchange and discovery through innovation whereby a coherent and integrated interdisciplinary research community works towards developing nuclear technologies through to application.  The DNI brings together the skills and expertise of the nuclear research community at The University of Manchester, the most advanced nuclear research capability in UK academia. Its aim is to create opportunities to grow the scale, scope and quality of the University’s nuclear activities, support development of distinctive features in Manchester’s nuclear research capability, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration. In addition, the DNI nurtures strategic partnerships with academia, industry, regulators, and government, and engages with the wider public through school activities, community outreach and the media.

Research is at the heart of The University of Manchester and the sheer scale, diversity and quality of our research activity sets us apart.  Much of this research combines expertise from across disciplines, making the most of the opportunities that our size and breadth of expertise affords.  We are able to combine disciplines and capabilities to meet both the challenges of leading-edge research and the external demands of government, business and communities.

We are looking to appoint a Director to be responsible for leadership and management of the Dalton Nuclear Institute, and for promoting interdisciplinary research within the Institute and externally on a national and international level.

You will be a person of the highest academic standing that commands the respect of colleagues within the Institute and the University, and externally, particularly with industrial and government stakeholders.  You must also have a strong commitment to promoting excellence in all aspects of academic endeavour, in research, education and equality, diversity and inclusion. The appointee will also have the ability to think strategically, build teams and effective working relationships, and be able to effectively manage change.  Previous experience of academic leadership would be an advantage.

You will hold a permanent substantive Chair within the School of Natural Sciences or the School of Engineering within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The appointment as the Director of the DNI will be for three years in the first instance, renewable subject to agreement. The Directorship will attract an additional honorarium over and above the agreed Professorial salary.

The Faculty and the University are fully committed to supporting and progressing equality, and the University holds a number of equality, diversity and inclusion awards, including our Athena Swan and Race Equality Charter Mark.  We encourage applicants from diverse career paths and backgrounds and from all sections of the community regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, sex, sexual orientation and transgender status. Applications are particularly welcomed from women and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic applicants who are currently under-represented at this level.
