This position will contribute to the BBSRC funded Greenhouse Gas Reduction research project ‘Greenhouse Gas Removal by Accelerated Peat Formation’ The Manchester team are responsible for the upland demonstrator project which will be trialling approaches to reducing greenhouse gas flux from restored peatland in the Peak District National Park in order to assess the potential of moorland restoration approaches as a greenhouse gas reduction technology.
The technician role will support the procurement and installation of monitoring equipment, will undertake data retrieval from the monitoring network and quality control of that data, and will be responsible for maintenance of the monitoring equipment. The role will require significant fieldwork in upland environments where weather conditions can be challenging.
You will work with the two Manchester investigators Professor Martin Evans and Dr Jonny Ritson as well as engaging with the wider research team at a number of other UK universities led by the Centre of Ecology and Hydrology in Bangor.
In addition, you will be required to support high quality teaching and research undertaken by The Department of Geography, Department of Planning and Manchester Institute for Education within the School of Environment, Education and Development.
Working under the general guidance of the Senior Technical Operations Manager, duties will include: preparation of chemicals and materials for practical laboratories according to timetabled sessions, monitoring and maintaining laboratory consumables stocks, maintaining chemical and equipment inventories, ensuring equipment for standard and more specialist techniques is maintained and ready for use, assisting in the disposal of waste chemicals and equipment and implementation of laboratory Health and Safety procedures. Some early starts and late finishes may be required.
