Job Description

The University of Manchester seeks to appoint a three-year Postdoctoral Research Associate, tenable from 01 October 2022 to 30 September 2025. The post is funded by a grant (AH/W004089/1) from the Arts and Humanities Research Council in support of the three-year research project, ‘Religion, Theology and Climate Change’.

The postholder will join the project’s research team: Prof. Peter Scott (Principal Investigator); Dr Celia Deane-Drummond (Co-Investigator, Laudato Si’ Research Institute, Campion Hall, Oxford University), and Dr Gemma Edwards (Co-Investigator, Sociology, University of Manchester). The project is based at the Lincoln Theological Institute in the Department of Religions and Theology at the University of Manchester.

The research project will focus on Christianity in the UK to explore in detail the on-the-ground theological responses and changes generated by how this religious tradition is responding to the crisis of climate change. Specifically, it will consider how the need to respond to the climate emergency is both leading to theological innovation and shaping Christian climate responses differently across diverse contexts. The project will work with a range of partners: the Dioceses of Manchester, Oxford, and Salford; CAFOD; Christian Climate Action and Operation Noah. Working with the project’s research team, the Research Associate will engage with some of the project’s partners and develop theological interpretations of the results of the project’s qualitative research, towards academic publication. The project will provide feedback to partners, and other interested parties, and the Research Associate will be involved in this work also. This role provides an exceptional opportunity to advance the theological discussion around climate change and to acquire additional skills and expertise valued in the academy and other employment settings.

Applicants will possess a PhD in Theology and Ecology/ Environment/ Science/ Evolution/ Creation or Religion and Nature/ Environment, with research expertise in current debates in religion, theology, environment, or climate change. The successful applicant will have the ability to undertake theological research, deliver knowledge exchange and plan for research impact, and the ability to plan and organise events such as briefings. They will also have effective written and spoken communication skills, be able to work as part of a team and independently, and to undertake some out of hours working.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
