The appointed Research Associate will work on the research project Biurbs - valuing biodiversity in multi-functional urban development and environments. This project is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Natural Environment Research Council under the Economics of Biodiversity programme (NERC grant reference number NE/X002349/1.
This 30-month interdisciplinary project covers three partner universities (Manchester, University of West England and University of East London). Main participants in Manchester are Economics in the School of Social Sciences and Geography in the School of School of Environment, Education and Development.
The project focuses on the value of biodiversity in multi-functional urban re-developments. Despite a growing appreciation of the benefits of biodiversity, its value is poorly considered in development processes. An integrated approach will recognise both synergistic benefits and trade-offs that will be critical in understanding local vs national or global benefits including adapting to climate change and social cohesion. The project involves extensive collaboration with UK stakeholders to ensure the work is relevant to decision making in practice. factors Recent urban sites will be used to assess the challenges and opportunities that stakeholders have experienced with sustaining and enhancing biodiversity. A workflow will be developed and applied to three sites to assess in-depth how a state-of-the-art approach to biodiversity gain can be integrated into planning and how this impacts the economics of urban land-uses.
