Job Description

The Manchester Centre of Robotics and AI of the University of Manchester is part of the Advanced Machinery Productivity Initiative (AMPI) which is to help regional, industrial growth in the North of England in the connected region of Greater Manchester, Rochdale and Leeds through targeted novel research, e.g. in the development of new soft manipulators, their control, suitable forms of path planning and advanced forms of human-robot interaction. AMPI is being led by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL).

The University of Manchester (UoM) has developed significant expertise in robotic manipulation, tele-robotics and has wide-reaching practical requirements for engagement with industry. The further advancement of this expertise in the various facilities of the university in Cumbria and in the City of Manchester is subject of this research project through AMPI.

A specific challenge is the human and AI-inspired path-planning of robotic arms, the human operator  supported, human-robot interaction enabled manipulation of high value / critical items, e.g. within glove boxes, for large scale throughput / product manufacturing. Autonomy and semi-autonomy will relieve human operators, provide quality assurance while allowing for flexibility through human operators. This project will develop various real-time manipulation systems of varying intelligence and autonomy for versatile and/or highly precise material handling. An important objective is the strong interaction with industry and national centres for knowledge transfer in the North of England.

The University of Manchester has fast-growing robotics activities, working across the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering and the School of Computer Science. The project will be led by Professor Guido Herrmann, University of Manchester.
