The School of Arts, Languages and Cultures invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a full time, temporary post of research associate, tenable from 1st October 2023 until 30th September 2024 for the AHRC funded project Indigenous Youth Subcultures and New Media in Latin America overseen by Dr Ignacio Aguiló (University of Manchester). This project combines social anthropology with Cultural Studies to look at how the Mapuche and Andean Kichwa (Runa) youth use social media platforms to share cultural products (in the broader sense) produced by young Indigenous creators, and how they build subcultural identities around them. For this post, we are looking to appoint an Associate who will mainly be dedicated to the project’s anthropological dimension.
Applicants will have a doctoral degree in Social Anthropology, Digital Humanities, New Media Studies, Latin American Studies, or a related subject. The successful applicant will have an excellent command of digital ethnographic research methods and on-site fieldwork experience, preferably in Latin America. They will be fluent in Spanish and have an excellent command of written and spoken English. Some knowledge of Kichwa and/or Mapudungun is particularly welcome.
The Research Associate will be a crucial contributor to the activities and outputs of the project. In addition, they will be expected to pursue independent research, within the framework of the project, leading to articles submitted for publication during and after the project's life. They will be involved in research planning, data collection and analysis, organising three public events, and creating and maintaining the project webpage and social media. They will also be involved in the design of an online exhibition. Finally, they will assist Dr Ignacio Aguiló with the research project administration. Resourcefulness, enthusiasm and the capacity to generate good rapport and collaborate effectively with other team members and project collaborators are crucial to the role.
