The School of Physics and Astronomy in the University is seeking to appoint an outstanding individual in two capacities: as the first holder of the newly created Sir Bernard Lovell Chair in Astrophysics, and as Director of Astronomy and Astrophysics leading the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics and the Jodrell Bank Observatory.

The School has 80 academic staff delivering education to undergraduate and postgraduate students in Physics and Astronomy. Research is based in four divisions: Condensed Matter, Atomic and Biological Physics; Accelerator, Nuclear and Particle Physics; Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics; Theoretical Physics. The 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Prof. Andre Geim and Prof. Konstantin Novoselov for their work on graphene. The School has extensive laboratories and computing facilities. The School operates the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire. Academics work in collaboration with physicists and astronomers worldwide and participate in experiments at international laboratories.
