Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw Research Fellowships

The flagship Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw Research Fellowships are aimed at outstanding scientists and engineers at an early stage in their academic careers.  We anticipate up to 4 of these prestigious Fellowships to be offered annually.  Each is for an initial 5 year period, leading to full academic tenure on completion, subject to performance.   

The funding will cover salary, estate and indirect costs for 5 years. The Fellow will be mentored and will participate in the New Academics Programme (NAP).  Successful Fellows who are about to start their first year are eligible to apply for a research grant of up to £20K. The expectation is that holders of these prestigious fellowships will have identified a substantial and significant research challenge, and that this will lead to the winning of research funding, world leading publications and or impact to industry/business/society in subsequent years.

In order to apply you should have completed your first PhD and normally have no more than 5 years of post-PhD research experience by the Faculty closing date of the application round. However, applicants who were awarded their first PhD more than 5 years prior to the closing date of the call may still be eligible in certain documented circumstances such as maternity, paternity, long term illness or career breaks.

The scheme is run through a two stage application process. Applicants are required in the First Stage to complete to the School deadline an application form and submit a full Curriculum Vitae (CV), together with a research proposal, an academic impact statement, and draft statement of strategic fit, an Equal Opportunities Monitoring form and contact details of two academic referees who can provide letters of recommendation. The referees should have been warned that the application is being submitted and willing to submit reference in the required timeframe.  Referees should comment on the individual and their potential to develop into an international research leader. People who supervised the candidate during their PhD period are eligible to act as a referee. Referees should be independent of the host school, Faculty of Science and Engineering, or The University of Manchester unless they are providing a recommendation in the capacity of the candidate’s PhD supervisor.   Please email the completed application form together with the above documents as a single PDF file to the host School email by 23.59 UK time on 22nd May 2017.

All shortlisted applications received by the Faculty in the Second Stage must have the written support of a Head of host School within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at The University of Manchester.


In the first instance the potential applicant must contact the Head of School of the host School to discuss the background and strategy for any application.
