This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious graduate with the ability and confidence to manage a collaborative project with Sandon Global Engraving Technology Limited.
The University of Manchester and Sandon are looking to recruit an Advanced Materials Surface Engineer to undertake this 36 month project which has an overall aim of facilitating the development, embedment and exploitation of expertise in materials science and surface engineering that will enhance the position of Sandon as the commercial centre of excellence for Anilox technology.
The position will provide the successful candidate with a unique opportunity to become involved in a range of applied research activities directed towards: (i) specification of new coating materials; (iii) optimisation of plasma coating and laser engraving technologies, (iii) development of innovative post-treatments and finishing methods; (iv) detailed characterisation, analysis and evaluation of engineered surfaces; (v) development of prototype products and supporting techno-commercial materials for the new generation of Anilox rollers.
Candidates will require a good degree at Bachelors level in Materials Science and Engineering and either a Master’s Degree with industrial experience or a PhD or close to completion of a PhD in Materials Science, Coatings and Surface Engineering, or Nano-structured Materials. They should also be able to demonstrate specialist knowledge in Surface Engineering (especially in thermal spray deposition of hard ceramic coatings, impregnation and laser engraving) and Nanostructured Materials.
This post is funded through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) award, a UK Government scheme intended to promote sustained and mutually beneficial relationships between universities and industry.
Based at Sandon in Runcorn (Cheshire), the successful candidate will work directly with supervisors from both the University and Sandon and will use the facilities and resources of both organisations. It is anticipated that, upon successful completion of the project, this fixed-term tenure will lead to a permanent position within Sandon as a senior member of the technical team.
