A postdoctoral Research Associate position is available for an outstanding and ambitious chemical engineer to undertake research in the field of industrial biotechnology and in particular in the bio production of added-value chemicals and materials from microalgal strains. This is part of an EU collaborative project called EnhanceMicroalgae, including number of academic and industrial partners form the Atlantic areas of EU. The project presents an exciting opportunity to undertake world-class research, perform project management tasks, collaborate with international industrial partners, organise workshops and relevant events, and lead vigorous and innovative dissemination of the work performed. Research will include an exciting combination of experimental and multi-scale computational tools to optimise cultivation conditions for maximum yield of added-value materials from microalgal strains. Scale-up in open raceway ponds and photobioreactors will be explored. Extraction and characterisation methodologies for the products of choice will also be explored. Innovative dissemination is an important part of the project, including high quality publications, oral presentations, media communications, creative web-based communications as well as the organisation of seminar, workshops, and training sessions.
You should have, or be working towards, a PhD in chemical engineering or industrial biotechnology. Expertise in microalgae-based systems and relevant techniques for cultivation, characterisation, extraction and bio production are essential. Knowledge of modelling techniques and computational programming is an integral part of the work.
You should be capable of working under your own initiative and leading a research team, comprising a number of PhD students. You will be expected to strongly liaise with the project partners, so excellent communication and organisational skills are also required.
