The increasing prevalence of anti-microbial resistance (AMR) is one of the key health challenges of the 21st century. Understanding the interaction between the microbes and the aspects of their environment in relation to AMR offers the possibility harnessing evolutionary processes themselves to allow antibiotic sensitive microbes to outcompete resistant ones. However, the evolutionary and environmental interactions and trade-offs are not well understood.
The appointee to this post will use stochastic modelling and/or statistical inference to characterise microbial evolution in experimental and clinical settings in response to anti-microbial treatments. A complementary post will use experimental characterisation of bacterial evolutionary landscapes, deep sequencing of bacterial populations and analysis of fitness effects of variants based on protein structure.
Essential skills and qualifications include: a PhD, or equivalent, in Theoretical Physics, Applied Mathematics or a related area, experience in non-equilibrium statistical physics, theory of stochastic processes or statistical inference at a research level, experience in analytical calculations, numerical simulations and data analysis in an area relevant to the project, excellent computational and statistical skills, including proficiency in the use of programming languages such as C++, Fortran, and statistical packages such as R.
This post will be full time for two years and with an immediate start date for the successful applicant.
