We seek to appoint a Research Associate to work with the Responsible Research and Innovation Group (RRI Group) that is embedded with the Manchester Synthetic Biology Research Centre (SYNBIOCHEM) at The University of Manchester. You will be housed at the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research, Alliance Manchester Business School, under the supervision of Professor Philip Shapira.

You will undertake research in the domain of responsible research and innovation, governance, and synthetic biology. The RRI Group is pursuing research on themes in synthetic biology that include research on scientific practices, ethics, commercialization, automation, sustainability, regulation, and policy. You will contribute to one or more of these themes. You can also put forward an additional research theme broadly within the domain of responsible research and innovation in the context of synthetic biology. You will also assist in preparing and delivering new materials for education and training for researchers and companies engaged in synthetic biology and support the RRI other activities related to RRI engagement, training, and workshops. 

You will support a scholar who seeks to develop leading-edge research related to the governance of emerging technologies and responsible research and innovation and who is keen to engage in a multidisciplinary team environment. You will have a commitment to research and publication and also to engagement. We welcome applicants from early career researchers, visiting scholars, and others for whom this one-year full-time position is suitable. The position is open to applicants from diverse educational backgrounds, including public policy and politics, science studies, social science, management and economics, science and engineering, information technology, health and life sciences, and environmental studies. Applicants who combine disciplines, for example life sciences at the undergraduate level with social sciences at the doctoral level are encouraged to consider this opportunity. However, we will also consider candidates with other combinations of qualifications. Applicants with either qualitative or quantitative (or a mix of) methodological research skills will be considered. The PhD (or equivalent) is expected to be completed prior to commencing employment.
