The Particle Physics group at the University of Manchester has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Associate funded by a grant from the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence. This grant is focused on the development of statistical analysis and machine learning tools for scientific discovery, and their initial proof-of-principle application to data from the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. These studies will be performed in the context of searches for dark matter and high-energy electroweak phenomena, and will encompass sensitivity studies and experimental analysis design for future facilities. The Manchester ATLAS group consists of six academic members of staff, ten research staff and fifteen PhD students.
The position requires a PhD or equivalent in particle physics, astrophysics, computer science, or a closely related discipline. The successful candidate will have experience with particle physics or astrophysics large-scale data analysis, and experience in the development of machine learning tools for research problems will be considered an asset. The appointment will be from April 2019 (or as soon as possible thereafter), and would extend for 18 months. Successful candidates will be based in Manchester but will be asked to make short trips to CERN and to the Alan Turing Institute in London.
