This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and highly skilled scientist/engineer.  Although industrial experience is desirable, post-doctoral applicants with commercially focussed research will be considered for the role in which knowledge exchange with companies at the leading edge of graphene science will be the primary role.

 

The GEIC is a £60m capital project to construct the world’s foremost centre for graphene commercialisation within the Masdar building at The University of Manchester. Although the post will be based within the Masdar Building it will also use National Graphene Institute and other UoM facilities where appropriate.

 

The University of Manchester is looking to recruit an Application Specialist with appropriate expertise in nano/micro-composite materials as described below. The Specialist will be involved in commissioning of the Energy laboratory equipment and conducting a number of short-term applied projects in partnership with a diverse range of industrial partners looking to investigate the use of graphene and 2D materials in energy storage media. It is envisaged that most projects will be to determine the most suitable materials and development of processes for cell production for specific applications.

 

Key domain areas/applications include:

 

  • Commissioning of equipment and process development for energy storage media such as Li-Batteries, other advanced battery technologies and supercapacitors.

 

Other domain areas/applications which will be considered include;

  • Experience of process development of other electrochemical devices such as fuel cells, flow cells, electrolysis cells etc.
  • Experience of process development of development of solar technologies, particularly thin film technologies.

 

The Application Specialists will consult with other researchers and the Application Managers on developing proposed approaches to projects as well as the scientific/facilities required. Application Specialists are expected to develop skills associated with the management of their projects, health and safety as well as further development of technical skills, for which training will be provided.

 

The position will provide the successful candidate with a unique opportunity to be involved in one the most significant and high profile research projects in the UK. They will be part of team leading the transfer of knowledge and technology from the University of Manchester to companies in the UK and beyond.

 

The Application Specialist will be expected to stay abreast across the breadth of state-of-the-art research and help translate this into commercial opportunities for our partners alongside the leading academics in graphene research and major global industrial companies.
