How would you like to work with a remarkable encyclopaedic collection of over 4 million objects and specimens, a committed team of curators and conservators and lead the development of new exhibition spaces and programmes, all at one of the world’s leading university museums?
Working to bring extraordinary collections, research and people together to explore big ideas is at the heart of what we do and we have an exciting new role which will be critical to this. We are looking for an innovative individual to lead the Collections and Collections Care Team as the Head of Collections and Exhibitions. This is a new role and you will work closely with the Director and staff from across the museum to shape and oversee the development of distinctive exhibitions (on-site and touring) and collections-based programmes/projects which build understanding between cultures and a sustainable planet.
In this diverse and enterprising role, you will bring a flair for collaborative working to manage the Collections and Collections Care Team, develop new museum-design and university partnerships, and forge national and international collaborations. You will bring a considerate approach to all aspects of collections care and be knowledgeable about current issues such as co-curation, decolonisation and restitution.
Manchester Museum is changing; ‘hello future’ is our vision to become the UK’s most inclusive, imaginative and caring museum. When the museum first opened in 1890 it was presented as an appeal to the civic spirit, scientific curiosity and devotion of the townsfolk of Manchester. Today, we are reimagining this, with the museum as an engine of civic engagement with a renewed commitment to learning and social action. ‘hello future’ is a £13 million project and we are building new and imaginative spaces including a South Asia Gallery, Chinese Culture Gallery and new Exhibition Hall. The new Head of Collections and Exhibitions will play a vital role in this exciting transformation.
As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status. All appointments are made on merit.
