A Research Associate position in theoretical cosmology is available in the cosmology group hosted at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics (JBCA). The position will start 1st March or later. You will mainly work with Prof. Dr. Jens Chluba but will also have the opportunity to interact with the other members of the cosmology group on theoretical studies of spectral distortions of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) as a novel cosmological/particle physics probe and its synergies with future CMB anisotropy experiments.

The University of Manchester hosts one of the largest astrophysics groups in the UK, with strong involvement in several ambitious telescopes (e.g., SKA, BINGO, DES, LSST, e-MERLIN). Most relevant to the position, the group is at the forefront of theoretical and experimental CMB studies. We are a major contributor to the past Planck satellite and QUIJOTE. We furthermore are actively involved in PIXIE and its enhanced versions, a NASA-led space mission concept to study CMB spectral distortions and B-mode polarization patterns at large angular scales, and APSERa, a ground-based experimental concept to detect the cosmological recombination lines from redshift z~103. We furthermore have major involvement in several future CMB B-mode polarization experiments, including CORE, LiteBIRD, The Simons Observatory, and the US-led CMB Stage IV and PICO initiatives. Members of the JBCA group are also involved in coordinating the activities for the Voyage 2050 white papers recently submitted to ESA.

We are looking for a Research Associate who is an expert in theoretical cosmology, with experience in particle cascade calculations and radiative transfer in the pre-recombination era. You would be work with our team to study the formation of CMB spectral distortions and how CMB spectroscopy may be used to extract novel information about the early Universe and particle physics. Observational possiblities will be discuss in collaboration with other members of the CMB distortion group. 

Knowledge and experience in aspect of theoretical cosmology and CMB spectral distortion physics are essential. You must also hold or be about to obtain a Ph.D or equivalent in a relevant field. You will have a demonstrable track record in communicating your research in both written and oral form. You must furthermore possess very good communication skills and have a keen interest in working in a diverse team with various levels of experience and expertise. Scientific programming skills (e.g., C/C++, Python, Mathematica) are essential, and knowledge of relevant cosmology tools (e.g., CosmoMC, CAMB) are also desired.

This position is funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant CMBSPEC and you are expected to contribute to the research activities of the team. The appointment will be for a period of 2 years, subject to probation and with the possibility of extension.
