The University of Manchester (UoM) is leading a new Future Biomanufacturing Research Hub (Future BRH, https://futurebrh.com/) with Spokes at Imperial, UCL, Nottingham, IBioIC, CPI, and the UK Catalysis Hub at Harwell. Funded by UKRI (EPSRC and BBSRC, £10M over 7 years), the Future BRH will develop new underpinning technologies based on Industrial Biotechnology (IB) to enable efficient, sustainable and innovative bio-based manufacturing in key sectors: Pharmaceuticals; Value-added Chemicals; Engineering Materials and Biofuels. The Future BRH will connect Hub and Spoke IB strengths in interdisciplinary discovery science with industry to deliver innovative and sustainable biomanufacturing solutions that position the UK at the vanguard of economic Clean Growth and the forefront of international developments in the global bio-economy.
As a research fellow, you will join an expert Future BRH research team (12 research fellows) that provides an interdisciplinary resource supporting a mix of innovative Platform Research and Grand Challenge projects in two complementary research themes “Automated and integrated biocatalyst engineering for biomanufacturing” and “Realising the value of industrial biotechnology at scale” working with academic and industrial partners. These new positions will drive the development of biomanufacturing platforms using biocatalysis, link our research platforms for “High throughput biocatalyst engineering” and “Continuous flow and cascade biocatalysis”, and deliver projects across the Grand Challenge themes working with multiple academic and industrial FutureBRH partners.
Working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary scientists, as a central part of a high quality national interdisciplinary research Centre, these senior research positions will provide successful candidates with an exciting opportunity to further develop and apply their research skills to the sustainable biomanufacture of chemicals, materials, pharmaceuticals and biofuels. The successful candidates will have full access to state-of-the-art facilities for high-throughput and automated biomolecule engineering, synthetic chemistry and flow technologies and will be supported in developing applications for independent research fellowships. Appointed at this senior research grade, the expectation is that the post holders will have the required broad vision and experience to establish and drive forward the science portfolio working collaboratively with academic and industrial partners across multiple projects.
