Translational research at the University of Manchester (UoM) and in particular in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, encompasses a wide range of activities stemming from discoveries in the fundamental sciences and progressing through a pipeline that includes hypothesis testing and elucidation of disease mechanisms, preclinical research in animal models, through to clinical trials in humans of new drugs, devices and diagnostic procedures and ultimately delivery and adoption within the NHS and the third sector. UoM is member of the Wellcome Trust Institutional Translation Partnership Awards (ITPA) network aimed at building better links between science, technology and innovation by removing barriers between disciplines and making it easier to take the first translational step.
This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to join support the UoM ITPA with a view to building a critical mass of support for all Translational Researchers across the University and its partner organisations. This professional services role will primarily focus on the spread of a new translational culture through a programme of training and engagement events, developing and maintaining stronger links and constructive relationships between academics but with a particular focus on Wellcome Trust funded investigators and Greater Manchester NHS Trust clinicians. The post will play a major role in moving the pre-clinical research along the translational research continuum by identifying funding opportunities in the early translation stage to facilitate pioneering research that reaches patients.
You will work in partnership with a team of Translational Research Managers funded by the Wellcome Trust TPA and the ERDF (one position currently advertised) within the RS&I team. This will ensure alignment of all translational research activities across the Faculty, academic and professional services colleagues, Directorate of Research and Business Engagement teams, as well as other University directorates and divisions. Moreover, the post holder will have close interactions with Health Innovation Manchester, NHS Trusts partners, Biobanks and the University of Manchester Innovation Factory to ensure a coordinated approach to translation and input across the partner organisations.
The selection and interview panel will be joint for both Translational Research Manager roles (TPA and ERDF), so please state if you have a preference for either role or if you would like to be considered for both positions.
The ideal candidate will be proactive and solution-focused with strong programme and project management skills; they will have the ability to engage at a peer-to-peer level with experienced academics and clinicians and the ability to effectively navigate hospital and academic organisational infrastructure.
