Applications are invited for a postdoctoral Research Associate position in language and literacy practices. The post is available from the 1st November 2021 and will be tenable on a fixed term basis until 31st October 2024.

This post offers the opportunity to join a thriving research group at the University of Manchester, and become a member of the ESRC International Centre for Language and Communicative Development (LuCiD), a multi-million pound collaboration between the Universities of Manchester, Liverpool and Lancaster. You will join a work package entitled Language and literacy practices across cultures, where you will work on a cross-cultural study of home and community language and literacy environments in the UK, with a particular focus on families from Chinese heritage, Caribbean heritage, and British heritage families.

You should hold or shortly expect to achieve a PhD or equivalent in Psychology, Linguistics, Education, Sociology, or Anthropology. You should also be fluent in both written and spoken English and Cantonese, (with Mandarin an advantage).

You will be a highly-motivated and independent researcher with experience in creating questionnaires in Qualtrics, conducting statistical analyses in R and administering standardised tests.  You will be able to work sensitively and diplomatically with a wide range of people from different backgrounds. The job will involve detailed literature reviewing, preparation of ethics applications, experimental design, recruitment and data collection, analyses, and dissemination.
