The University of Manchester is a partner in a £5.8M EPSRC programme grant entitled ‘New Wire Additive Manufacture (NEWAM)’, a multidisciplinary project aimed at providing the enabling science that will allow industry to advance wire-based additive manufacturing of large, high value-added, metal components, with optimised microstructures and properties. The NEWAM programme is highly interdisciplinary, combining world-leading expertise in process development, simulation, metallurgy and microstructural development, and mechanical and non-destructive testing.
As part of this programme, we are seeking a Research Associate (PDRA) with expertise in modelling microstructural evolution in Additive Manufacturing of titanium and other alloys. This post will involve using crystal plasticity, phase field and thermodynamic simulation tools to predict process-microstructure-property interactions during large area additive manufacture and inform alloy and process design. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary research team with partners at Cranfield, Coventry, and Strathclyde Universities. NEWAM has strong industrial involvement from companies such as Airbus, Rolls Royce, and GKN.
The post is currently available until the 24th of June 2023 - however, the project is in the process of applying for an extension of a further 6-12 months due to delays caused by the COVID19 pandemic.
This is a full-time position, although flexible working/secondment applications will also be considered. It is based at Manchester, with UK and international travel requirements.
