Job Description

We are seeking to appoint a full-time Research Associate on a fixed-term contract for twelve months to work closely with project PI Dr Edmond Smith. This post represents an exciting opportunity for an ambitious individual to work on a ESRC funded project entitled “Risky Business: Investing in Innovation and Britain’s Economic Development, 1600-1750”.

The project will provide a new historical account of economic development that adds to our understanding of how ordinary people encountered, understood, and participated in investment in the early modern period. The successful candidate will undertake archival and prosopographical research relating to the business operations and commercial networks of approximately 1710 identified investors between 1600 and 1750. They will also have the opportunity to organize and participate in academic and policy orientated events, contribute to peer-reviewed academic outputs, and assist in public engagement activities.

Applicants must hold a PhD in economic and/or social history (ideally with a focus on early modern trade or business) or equivalent qualification. Experience of developing and analysing datasets, as well as conducting relevant digital and archival research, is preferred.

As an equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all sections of the community regardless of age, sex, gender (or gender identity), ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and transgender status.  All appointments are made on merit.
