IT Services at the University of Manchester is a vibrant and fast-moving department, we focus on delivering excellent customer service and quality services for our staff, students and researchers. 

The Team

Research IT provides research-focussed, specialist computing infrastructure, software engineering, data science, application support and training to researchers across a wide range of domains, who have diverse technical requirements. The Research Software Engineering team within Research IT is responsible for providing a range of software engineering services including engineering, consultancy and training. Research IT comprise a friendly, open, inclusive and diverse group of skilled people within a passion for helping others and delivering world-class research.

The Role

This role combines the best of two worlds: the ability to run and shape the software development activity of a cutting-edge group of probabilistic and machine learning researchers at a world leading institution, while also allowing you to allowing you to help lead the Research Software Engineering (RSE) service at The University of Manchester. Half of the role requires you to demonstrate people, project and technical leadership with the other half requiring you to practice a high standard of research software engineering.

For the technical half of the role, you will join a team of probabilistic modellers and machine learning researchers developing new principles for AI-assistants, which are able to help their users even when the goals are only partially known, such as in the beginning of scientific research.

The group will be working on topics including automatic experimental design, Bayesian inference, human-in-the-loop learning, machine teaching, privacy-preserving learning, reinforcement learning and simulator-based inference.

As a member of the RSE leadership team you will line manage other Research Software Engineers and contribute to the operation of the team. This includes the management of demand and resource planning, and the project management of a portfolio of research software engineering projects carried out by other RSEs in the team.

The Person
The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience in algorithm development and implementation in software.
  • Experience of probabilistic modelling.
  • Experience of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Experience in the complete software engineering lifecycle.
  • A passion for supporting research and research software.
  • An empathetic and sensitive approach when dealing with people.
  • A commitment to personal and professional development and a desire to learn.
  • Meticulous organisation, time and project management skills and experience.
  • Experience using software engineering tools and processes including version control, agile tooling (e.g. Jira, GitHub Projects, KANBAN), code reviews and pull requests.
