The University of Manchester at Harwell (https://www.harwell.manchester.ac.uk), located at Diamond Light Source, wishes to increase the capability of the team in handling located scientific datasets with AI and machine learning. We are offering a prestigious technical position in the area of developing AI/Machine learning -based techniques to enable novel analysis of the data streams from the national facilities at Harwell. The position is for a fixed term two-year period, with the potential for the term to be extended, and is a joint venture between the University of Manchester and the, Scientific Machine Learning (SciML) Research Group of the Scientific Computing Department, at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) at their Harwell Laboratory site.
The Post-Doctoral Research Assistant in Data Science will be appointed jointly by the University of Manchester at Harwell (UoMaH) and STFC. They will be based, and managed, at the Harwell campus by the UoMaH Director and be affiliated to the Department of Computer Science. On the STFC side their work will be supervised by the Head of the Scientific Machine Learning Group. Their work will be split between developing software infrastructure to enable novel data analytics research, and building a network of users and facilities at the Harwell neutron and light sources who are developing techniques using Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to interrogate the big data streams generated by the National Facilities at Harwell. This will facilitate the development of novel automated solutions that are intelligent and capable of handling multidimensional, multi-modal datasets. As such, for this post, we are seeking a ‘hands-on’ data scientist with a background and knowledge of machine learning, applied maths, and data analysis along with strong research software engineering skills. The ideal candidate is someone whose primary focus is developing novel machine learning-based models and algorithms from fundamental principles in mathematics, physics and computer science, and implementing them in software with relevant data analysis components, and who is keen to apply their skills to further the science performed at the Harwell facilities.
